I’m not sure if what I’m about to share was the reason or if I was just having one of those “on days” for yesterday’s 12 miler but it felt like I had a turbo booster on my legs and heart and it was one of those days that just makes you really love the run.
I do my Wednesday semi-long runs at recovery pace since I do Tuesday sprints/hills/whatever I feel like doing which gets my heart rate pretty high so Wednesday’s I use to recovery while still building aerobic capacity so that I can knock out a Thursday tempo. Today’s tempo will be 4 miles on the trail and trail tempo runs are so. darn. hard. But I guess that’s what you gotta do when you sign up for a trail race and are looking to PR.
Onto the good stuff aka Vega. A while back, about a year or so, I was in search of a natural pre-workout/energy drink that I could safely use before long runs and semi-long run days or any day that started really early and I needed a little boost. Vega seemed like a no-brainer because the products are made of plant-based, whole food, nutrient-dense ingredients and I really like the company’s mission and they have their Vega Sport line designed specifically for athletes.
I’ve since used the Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer before every race- 50K, 50 mile, 100K, 100 mile and it’s been ah-may-zing. During my past 100 mile, the Keys 100, I felt it gave me good energy and mental focus for the first half so 50 miles worth. The mental focus part was huge for me here because I needed to be on top of my hydration and fueling because it was seriously hot running on the Keys pavement for such an extended period of time and if I wasn’t taking in enough water every hour I was sure to be doomed.
While the Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer Acai Berry flavor has been my go-to, I wouldn’t say the flavor is 100% what keeps me coming back. It’s beyond tolerable but it isn’t super delicious so before yesterday’s run I went in search of a smoothie recipe since I knew Vega is always posting recipes. Who isn’t down for a super satisfying, cold, crisp, energizing smoothie in the summer?! If you aren’t then we’ll probably never get each other.
This smoothie took the Energizer to a whole other level and I don’t think I’ll ever have it any other way again if I can help it. I adapted my recipe from the Vega Recipe Center (since I didn’t have all of their ingredients on hand) and just threw everything into the Blendtec and BOOM. Turbo speed engaged within 5 minutes. **It’s recommended to drink this 40 minutes before a run and I know I’ve read somewhere else that the Energizer isn’t meant to be drank every single day which is why I only use it before semi or long runs (runs lasting at least 2 hours or longer)**
